Are you looking for us?

Are you considering a major in some aspect of communication or the arts but wondering what these majors entail? What will you need to do to prepare for these ever-changing and multidimensional fields? Here are some big ideas that Emerson believes are critical for you to be successful. Some of these ideas may seem too esoteric for you to picture as you imagine your day-to-day life, but others may resonate with you.

Let's begin with your core values and that of the college. Do they match? Emerson believes in freedom of expression, diversity of perspective, cultural awareness, integrity, civility, and the responsibility of ethical choice. Emerson has lived these values since its founding in 1880 as a college of oratory and the performing arts. Regardless of the changes in the field, Emerson believes that it is important for communication and arts professionals to embrace these values.

What do you need to learn to communicate effectively? First, learn to listen. We teach our students that they must have something worthwhile to say and must learn how to be heard. Therefore, we teach our students to think and express themselves with clarity, substance, and insight. They are instilled with the highest professional standards through a combination of rigorous academic inquiry and experiential learning. Through the study of liberal arts, interdisciplinary study and courses directed toward professional development, Emerson students learn to create and communicate with depth, honesty, courage, and passion.

Do these ideals resonate with who you are and who you hope to become? If you are ready to think critically about your work in one or several of our majors, please read more about our programs of study and visit the campus to talk with our faculty, staff and students about your future at Emerson.
