Leaders and executives know the value and necessity of defining and communicating the vision, mission, and strategy of their organizations. Communication management professionals lead this strategic definition process, designing and implementing communication plans appropriate to their organization’s values and purpose.
A comprehensive understanding of effective communication strategies, negotiation skills, and media expertise will prepare you for leadership positions in communication. Your professional skills as a communication management specialist will transfer across sectors, making you equally valuable in the business, government, and non-profit sectors.
Educational preparation in management principles, organizational behavior, and communication strategies.
Emerson’s CM program prepares you to design and execute effective communication plans that help define and support the daily operations and long-term vision of organizations in the private or public arenas. We advocate a coordinated, proactive approach based on a clear definition of the organization’s goals. So that you may become a leader and a change agent, Emerson’s coursework focuses not only on leadership and negotiation, but also on organizational communication dynamics, strategic planning, media expertise, presentation techniques, and behavioral research. At Emerson, you will acquire an understanding of an organization’s stakeholders that will help you develop effective, ethical communication campaigns and strategies.
A flexible program to match your professional goals.
Our curriculum allows you to customize a program based on your experience, expertise, and professional goals. You select from electives—both within the program and in other departments if you choose—to strengthen your practical and theoretical experience. You will discover the importance of research in assessing the current climate of an organization and developing communication solutions appropriate to the organization and its environment. Classes in negotiation, crisis communication, leadership, strategic communication, and public affairs will prepare you to thrive in the field of communication management. Emerson has long-standing relationships with many corporate and non-profit organizations throughout Boston, as well as New York City, and Washington, D.C., which afford our students outstanding opportunities for internships.
